South Bay Boys Soccer Top 10 - 2/17/09

1. Mira Costa (15-5-2, 7-2-1) Slip up at home against Peninsula doesn’t cost Mustangs league title. But are they just a one-pony (or Wolfe) show? Tough draw gives them Newport Harbor in the first round of the playoffs who finished third in the tough Sunset League but had impressive wins against DI powers El Toro (ranked 1st) and Upland.

2. North Torrance (15-5-2, 7-1-2) Quest to go 10-0 in Pioneer comes up short. Will talented Saxons stay disciplined enough to make run in the playoffs? Southlandpreps says Coach’s fashion sense earns Saxons a first-round win.

3. Leuzinger (9-5-3, 7-3-0) There’s no doubt about the legitimacy of the Olympians’ offense, but defense wins championships. First round opponent Woodbridge has a stingy defense—should be interesting.

4. Animo Leadership (17-3-4, 10-0-0) Let’s see what Animo can do in Division 5 now that the opponents become more potent. Offense gambling style is impressive, but defense gets you through the playoffs.

5. West Torrance (10-4-7, 5-3-2) Scary finish for the Warriors, losing to Palos Verdes in overtime, and then having to go to overtime with 0-10 Redondo to secure third place in Bay League. Southlandpreps still picks West and their tough defense for the upset on the road against Westlake.

6. Palos Verdes (12-8-2, 5-5-0) Never going to light up the scoreboard, but surprising defense earned this team a playoff wildcard spot against Servite. After missing the playoffs last year, PV tries to shock the soccer southland with two wins behind the Orange Curtain this week to put itself back on the map.

7. South Torrance (14-6-2, 7-2-1) Solid turn around for the Spartans after a disappointing first half in league. Win over league rival North should give the team some momentum heading into the playoffs. Speedy teams can always make a run.

8. Lawndale (8-4-3, 6-2-2) Southlandpreps tips its hat to Lawndale. Even though they dropped down to third in a tough Pioneer League, this team came out of nowhere, and no one still knows anything about them. Don’t be surprised if “The Dale” gets two victories this week.

9. Narbonne (13-2-1, 7-1-0) Let down guard against Banning. Gauchos needed to sweep through league to prove they belong with the Southern Section teams.

10. Hawthorne (7-6-3, 6-3-1) and Inglewood (10-9-4, 6-3-1) Congratulations to the co-Ocean League champs. What the heck happened to Santa Monica, last year’s state champion?

Honorary Mention:
Morningside: Makes the playoffs as an at-large.
Torrance: Also, in the playoffs as an at-large. You never know.
Peninsula: Went 4-1 in their final 5 league matches, posting wins against PV, and Mira Costa. Wow. Disastrous start and lack of discipline did in this very talented team that won the CIF Championship last year.
Chadwick: Won the Prep League. A scrappy team that tied Palos Verdes and beat Torrance. Hats off to the Dolphins who haven’t really been on the map since the days of John Marmelstein.

Boys Basketball Playoff Breakdown

Best First Round Match-Ups

Santa Monica (Ocean #3, #11 Seed) at Montclair (Mt. Baldy #2)
Traveling in the playoffs is tough and Santa Monica has been inconsistent all season. This game should tell us about Santa Monica’s chances of making a serious run.

Mira Costa (Bay At-Lrg) at Yucaipa (Citrus Belt #3, #15 Seed)
Tough draw for the Mustangs in terms of distance (90 miles), but Southlandpreps likes the match-up. Mustangs have been playing their best basketball of late.

Best Draws

Leuzinger
Of all the possible match-ups the Olympians face through the first three rounds, only Canyon Springs finished second or higher in their league. Every other team finished third in league or received an at-large bid.

Santa Monica
Amazingly, as the #11 seed, the Vikings will not run into a league champion until the semi-finals at the earliest. #3 seed Corona Centennial likely awaits in the quarterfinals, but they did not win their league (finished second in the Big VIII).

Most Difficult Draws

Carson
One word, Westchester. Ouch!

Redondo
No team that finishes #2 in their league wants to face a top 4 seed in the first two rounds. Redondo will likely receive such a fate against Huntington Beach, the #4 overall seed, in the second round.

Dark Horse Teams

North Torrance
It’s about playing well at the right time and the Saxons are coming off three double digit wins in a row. North’s unique style of play will present a challenge for whoever they play and a favorable draw does not hurt either. Don’t be surprised if the Saxons are playing on Friday, Feb 27th in the semi-finals.

West Torrance
The Warriors have shown flashes throughout the year of being able to play at an extremely high level. Assuming both teams take care of their business on Wednesday, #4 seed Nogales better be ready in round two.

Upset Alerts

Mira Costa (Bay At-Lrg) at Yucaipa (Citrus Belt #3, #15 Seed)
If the Mustangs don’t succumb to the two hour drive, they will upset the #15 seed Yucaipa

Estancia (Orange Coast At-Lrg) at Lawndale (Pioneer #3, #9 Seed)
Due to academics disqualifications, Lawndale only has eight eligible players. Though they should survive against Estancia, a loss here would not be shocking.

Potential Local Match-Ups(1st 3 Rounds)

2nd Round Division VAA
St. Bernard (Del Rey At-Lrg, #15 Seed) vs. Morningside (Ocean #2, #2 Seed)

3rd Round City D-2
Narbonne (Marine #3, #6 Seed) vs. San Pedro (Marine #1, #3 Seed)

Who Takes Home the Title

Bishop Montgomery – Division IVAA
Likely match-ups with Inglewood in the semi-finals and Serra in the finals stand in the way of a Knights championship.

Vistamar – Division VI
The Vikings are little known to many in the South Bay, but are poised to make a serious run at a CIF championship. Besant Hill, the #1 seed out of the Condor League presents the biggest hurdle.

South Bay Boys Basketball Top 10 Poll 2/17/09

1) Bishop Montgomery (23-3, 7-1) – After dropping 3 in a row to Serra dating back to last season, Bishop got sweet revenge by dismantling the Cavaliers at home, 66-47. The win, in combination with a victory later in the week against Cathedral (83-64), gave the Knights an outright Del Rey League championship. The #1 seed in Division IVAA, Bishop earned a 1st round bye in the playoffs and will host the winner of St. Francis vs. Santa Paula. (Last week #1)

2) Leuzinger (21-5, 9-1) – Last Tuesday’s match-up with Redondo for the Bay League championship turned lopsided as the Olympians dominated from start to finish winning, 86-53. For good measure, Leuzinger traveled to Peninsula later in the week to finish on league play with a 62-45 win over a battered Panthers squad. Winners in 8 of their last 9, Leuzinger is playing exceptionally well heading into their first round playoff match up with Servite. (Last week #2)

3) Inglewood (20-7, 9-1) – By defeating Hawthorne (67-58) Tuesday night, the Sentinels positioned themselves for an Ocean League championship if they could avenge an earlier season loss to Morningside. After trailing most the game, Inglewood outplayed Morningside down the stretch to prevail 64-59 and earn an outright Ocean League championship. The win helped Inglewood to a #4 overall seed in Division IVAA and potential match-up with Serra in the semi-finals. The Sentinels start their playoff run at home against Bosco Tech. (Last week #4)

4) Serra (20-7, 6-2) – After dropping Monday night’s match-up with Bishop Montgomery for the Del Rey League championship, 66-47, the Cavaliers rebounded to defeat Bishop Amat, 54-47. Due to the strength of their non-league performance as well as their victory over Bishop Montgomery earlier in league play, Serra was able to secure a #2 overall seed in the Division IVAA playoffs. A Bishop Montgomery vs. Serra rematch for the CIF Finals is a strong possibility if the Cavaliers can find some consistency in their game. Serra opens the playoffs at home against Alemany. (Last week #3)

5) Morningside (19-8, 8-2) – After defeating Inglewood earlier in the season 69-61, the Monarchs fell at home in a rematch for the Ocean League title, 64-59. That, in combination with a loss earlier in league play to Santa Monica, left Morningside a game back of the Sentinels even though they split their season series. An extremely dangerous team in the lower divisions, the Monarchs earned a #2 overall seed in division VAA and host Loma Linda Academy in the 1st round. (Last Week #5)

6) San Pedro (19-7, 10-2) – For the first time since 1991, San Pedro is the Marine League basketball champions. The story of the year in South Bay basketball, the Pirates claimed the title by going 3-0 in league play for the week with victories against Carson (67-53), King-Drew (74-62) and Banning (55-49). Winners in 8 of their last 9, the Pirates received a 1st round bye in the playoff and will host the winner of Bell vs. Grant in the 2nd round. A quarterfinal match-up with Narbonne looms if both teams take care of business. (Last week, #8).

7) North Torrance (19-7, 8-2) – A strong week for the Saxons who destroyed South Torrance 85-38, before getting revenge on Lawndale 92-72 to claim 2nd place in the Pioneer League. Due to their up-tempo style of play and experience, North (a #6 overall seed) presents a nightmare draw for opponents in the IIIAA playoffs. The Saxons start the playoffs at home against Moorpark (Last week #9)

8) Santa Monica (19-7, 6-4) – No team in the south bay has been more difficult to figure out this season than the Vikings. Wins over some of the best teams in the state were followed up with meltdowns against below average competition. We have no answers for this, but recognize that Santa Monica is a dangerous team in the playoffs if the monster awakes. Three straight wins to end the regular season is a positive sign for the Vikings who are seeded #11 in Division IA. We shall see which Santa Monica team shows up when the team travels to Montclair for their 1st round game. (Last Week, Not Ranked)

9) Narbonne (18-9, 8-4) – Narbonne get back into the Top 10 this week after finishing off Marine League play with a 3-0 week including a 68-62 victory over Washington that cleared the way for San Pedro’s Marine League championship. The reward for #6 seed Narbonne, a possible quarterfinals match-up with the #3 seed Pirates in the city playoffs. After a bye in the 1st round, Narbonne will host the winner of Hamilton vs. San Fernando. (Last Week, Not Ranked)

10) Redondo (14-12, 7-3) – While the 14-12 overall record is less than impressive, southlandpreps has to give credit to Redondo for a strong showing in the Bay League this season. After getting beat up by Leuzinger earlier in the week 86-53, the Sea Hawks rebounded to take down West 63-61 to secure 2nd place in the Bay League. Rewarded with the #13 seed in Division IIAA, the Sea Hawks will host Burbank to start off the playoffs in a game to be carried live by southlandpreps. (Last week, #6)

Bubble: West Torrance (18-8, 6-4), Lawndale (18-9, 5-5)

South Bay Boys Soccer Top 10 Poll 2/10/09

1. Mira Costa (14-4-2, 6-1-1) Rolling. Can clinch the Brutal Bay with a win over Peninsula on Tuesday. Impressive 3-0 win over West on the road.

2. North Torrance (14-4-2, 6-0-2) Back atop the Pioneer League standings where they belong. Saxons need a tie or win against Lawndale on Thursday for the crown.

3. West Torrance (9-3-7, 4-2-2) Warriors come back after disappointing loss at home to Costa to beat Leuzinger 2-1 in the rain on the road.

4. Leuzinger (7-5-3, 5-3-0) Good thing Olympians got out to 5-0 start. Losses to Costa, Palos Verdes, and West have Leuzinger looking at a potential 3rd place finish.

5. Animo Leadership (15-3-4, 9-0-0) Not much to say. League play is a yawner.

6. Lawndale (7-3-3, 5-1-2) Last minute loss to South Torrance drops Lawndale down one spot. Can they rebound and pull off the big upset on Thursday?

7. Palos Verdes (11-7-2, 4-4-0) Defense gives up less than a goal per game, offense scores less than a goal per game. Big win on the road against Leuzinger, disappointing loss to rivals Peninsula in the rain.

8. South Torrance (12-6-2, 5-2-1) Huge win against Lawndale. South puts themselves in playoff contention.

9. Narbonne (13-2-1, 7-1-0) Let down guard against Banning. Gauchos needed to sweep through league to prove they belong with the Southern Section teams.

10. Torrance (10-8-4, 4-3-1) Should be an exciting showdown with South on Thursday for the last playoff spot from the Pioneer.

Notes: With three wins last week (2 vs. Redondo and one vs. Palos Verdes), Peninsula (3-4-1 in league) has actually kept themselves mathematically alive for the playoffs after an 0-4-1 start. If West or Palos Verdes finished in 4th place in the Bay League, CIF should get their act together and give one of the two Division 1 Wildcard spots to either one of these teams. The Bay League has proven over the past couple years to be a powerhouse, bringing respect back to South Bay Soccer. The only other team that should be considered ahead of either West or PV is Newport Harbor down in the OC. Aside from them, there is Capo Valley, but they might end up in 5th place in their league, and haven’t beaten anyone noteworthy. Let’s hope CIF does their research. Also, in the Ocean League there is a logjam. Currently, with two games left, Inglewood, Hawthorne, Santa Monica and Morningside each have 4 wins and a tie, creating a 4-way tie for first. Beverly Hills has 4 wins, meaning they are only one point out of first. In a league like the Bay where wins count for 3 points and a tie for 1 point (many leagues have the two points for a win format), it will be interesting to say how the coaches will play close games. Will coaches go for the win, or for the tie? Should be interesting.

Serra vs. Bishop Montgomery Boys Basketball Live Blog

South Bay Boys Basketball Top 10 Poll 2/9/09

1) Bishop Montgomery – At 21-3, 5-1, Bishop continued to take care of business last week with wins against Bishop Amat (57-49) and St. Bernard (85-69). Tonight’s showdown at home against Serra (to be covered live by southlandpreps) will decide the winner of the Del Rey league championship. Serra topped Bishop in their first meeting earlier this year 58-55. (Last week #1)

2) Leuzinger – After taking care of Palos Verdes 69-31 on Tuesday night, Leuzinger avenged their earlier season loss to West with a 78-68 win. Tuesday night’s game at home against Redondo will likely decide if Leuzinger is the outright Bay League champion or if they’ll have to share it with the Sea Hawks. (Last week #2)

3) Serra – Two wins last week included a 67-60 victory over Cathedral makes it four straight for the Cavaliers (19-6, 5-1). It’s a good time of the year to get hot and Serra seems to have settled in a bit after some inconsistency earlier in the season. Serra goes for its fourth straight wins against Bishop Montgomery tonight and more importantly, a Del Rey League championship. (Last week #3)

4) Inglewood – As was the case with all five of our top teams, Inglewood 18-7, 7-1, closed last week with two wins and no losses. A road victory at Santa Monica (54-48) on Wednesday night was followed up on Friday with a win at home against Culver City, 74-53. If the Sentinels take care of business against Hawthorne on Tuesday, then Thursday’s game at Morningside will be for the Ocean League championship. (Last week #4)

5) Morningside –Winners in 9 of their last 10, Morningside 18-7, 7-1, stayed even with Inglewood atop the Ocean League standings with a 2-0 week of their own defeating Culver City 58-49 and Hawthorne 84-76. Morningside travels to 4-18 Beverly Hills on Tuesday before hosting Inglewood for the Ocean League championship on Thursday. (Last Week #6)

6) West Torrance – A victory earlier in the week over Mira Costa (54-46), set up a rematch with Leuzinger after the Warriors stunning upset of the Olympians 76-73 back on January 20th. Unfortunately for West, there would be no repeat as Leuzinger played well and dispatched the Warriors 78-68. West currently sits at 3rd in the Bay League standings one game behind Redondo with the two teams scheduled to play this Thursday to close out the regular season. (Last week, #5)

7) Centennial – Winners of seven straight and currently sitting atop the Pioneer League standings, Centennial 13-9, 7-1 enters the rankings this week at #7. A tremendous week for the Apaches with road wins at both North (82-77) and Lawndale (65-42). If Centennial handles their business this week against Torrance and El Segundo, they will be Pioneer League champions. (Last week, Not Ranked)

8) San Pedro – In similar fashion to North, San Pedro 16-7, 7-2, had a 1-1 week beating Gardena 74-58, but dropping the one it really needed against Washington 79-66. If the Pirates can win all three of their league games this week against Carson, King-Drew and Banning, they’ll likely share the Marine League title with Washington. (Last week, #9).

9) North Torrance – A 1-1 week for the Saxons 17-7, 6-2 including a key loss at home Tuesday night against Centennial 82-77 that dropped the Saxons out of a 1st place tie in the Pioneer League. A tough match-up with Lawndale Thursday night will likely decide the 2nd place finisher in the Pioneer League. The first time these two teams met it took OT to settle the outcome, at 69-68 Lawndale victory. (Last week #7)

10) Lawndale – At 18-7, 5-3, Lawndale has struggled since their big win against North two weeks ago which at the time tied them atop the Pioneer League standings. Since that time, Lawndale has dropped 2 of 3 with the lone win coming against a struggling South team by five. Lawndale will have a chance to catch North for 2nd in the Pioneer League if they can take down the Saxons for a second time this year on Thursday. (Last week, #10)

South Bay Boys Soccer Top 10 Poll 2/2/09

1. Mira Costa (12-4-2, 4-1-1) Mustangs take over top spot with impressive 2-1 win over previously league unbeaten Leuzinger. Big showdown with West looming.

2. Leuzinger (7-2-2, 5-1-0) Luck finally runs out against the Mustangs. Tough week for the Olympians vs. Palos Verdes and West.

3. West Torrance (8-2-7, 3-1-2) Three league wins in a row move West into a position to take over second place in the Bay with win over Costa. Will their stingy defense get it done against Costa’s potent offense?

4. North Torrance (12-4-2, 4-0-2) Strong preseason showing gives them a higher notch in the rankings over Pioneer League foe, Lawndale, who possesses the same league record.

5. Lawndale (6-2-3, 4-0-2) Still the biggest surprise in the South Bay. Still holding strong, battled North to a tie.

6. Animo (10-3-4, 4-0-0) Shocker: Animo beats New Community Jewish, 5-1, the only other team in their league worth mentioning.

7. Narbonne (12-1-1, 6-0-0) Gauchos aren’t messing around in league. Weak preseason only thing keeping Narbonne from moving up higher in the rankings.

8. Palos Verdes (10-6-2, 3-3-0) Was four goals against Redondo a flash in the pan for this offense? PV goes on the road twice this week, battling for its playoff life against Leuzinger and cross-hill rival Peninsula.

9. Torrance (9-7-4, 3-2-1) Got off the bubble and into the top ten by beating South and working a draw against Lawndale. Things are looking up for the Tartars.

10. Inglewood (8-7-4, 4-1-1) Dramatic week in the Ocean League finds Inglewood leading the pack.

On the Bubble: San Pedro (9-6-5, 1-1-4), South Torrance (10-6-2, 3-2-1), Morningside (10-5-1, 3-3-0)

South Bay Boys Basketball Top 10 Poll 2/2/09

1) Bishop Montgomery – At 19-3, Bishop has shown the most consistency of any team in the South Bay this season. This week was no exception as Bishop knocked Cathedral from the top of the Del Rey League standings with a 73-55 thrashing. While everyone focuses on the big games (which are definitely important), southlandpreps likes the way Bishop wins the games it should. This trait is rare in high school basketball and is a sure sign of a quality team. (Last week #3)

2) Leuzinger – A solid week for the Olympians with double digit wins at home against Peninsula (74-63) and on the road against Mira Costa (88-68). At 17-5, 5-1, Leuzinger is now tied atop the Bay League standings with Redondo. Jerry Evans looks to be the front runner for Bay League M.V.P. honors after another strong week in which he posted 25 points, 14 rebounds against Peninsula and 22 points, 9 rebounds against Costa. (Last week #4)

3) Serra – In a week where several top teams failed to take care of business, it’s hard to not like Serra going 2-0. On Tuesday night, a Marquis Lee steal and lay-up with 50 seconds left broke a 38-38 tie and gave the Cavaliers a 2 point victory over visiting Bishop Amat. Serra followed up that performance by drubbing St. Bernard 73-48 on Friday night. Back to back games against Cathedral (who beat Serra two weeks ago) and Bishop Montgomery will determine whether this team is a contender or a pretender. (Last week #5)

4) Inglewood – In the battle for Ocean League supremacy, Inglewood fell at home Tuesday night against Morningside 69-61, before regrouping to dispatch struggling Beverly Hills 70-58 on Friday. The good news for Inglewood, Morningside failed to win at Santa Monica on Friday thus keeping the Sentinels tied atop the Ocean League standings. (Last week #2)

5) West Torrance – After going a month and a half without a loss (13 straight wins), West dropped back to back games against Redondo (55-52) and Peninsula (64-63). The two losses not only drop West from the top of the league standings, but they are now sitting in 3rd place behind Leuzinger and Redondo. A win this Friday at Leuzinger is a must if West is to have any shot at a Bay League championship. (Last week, #1)

6) Morningside – After winning 7 in a row including a victory against cross-town rival Inglewood (69-61) to take sole possession of 1st place in the Ocean League standings, Morningside fell at home to Santa Monica 56-44. Losing by double digits to a Santa Monica squad that had been reeling, suggests the Monarchs fell victim to a post big game letdown. It will be interesting to see if this performance ends up costing the Monarchs an Ocean League championship. (Last Week #7)

7) North Torrance – After suffering a tough overtime loss to Lawndale on Wednesday night 69-68, North 16-6, 5-1 got back on track by taking down El Segundo 64-46 Friday night. A home contest with Centennial on Wednesday night will give us the front runner for the Pioneer League Championship. (Last week #6)

8) Santa Monica – A week after it looked like Santa Monica has mailed it in for the season, the Vikings responded with a 2 win week including an upset of Morningside 56-44. Santa Monica has another opportunity to show us they are for real this week when Inglewood visits. (Last week #10)

9) San Pedro – Winners of 4 straight and currently sitting atop the Marine League standings, San Pedro makes their first appearance in the southlandpreps top 10. After taking care of Banning 70-65 on Wednesday night, San Pedro took down Narbonne 65-62 in a game covered live by southlandpreps. A win Wednesday night against Washington would all but assure the Pirates of a Marine League championship. (Last week, not ranked).

10) Lawndale – Southlandpreps has been talking for weeks about the North Torrance versus Lawndale match-up as a chance for the Cardinals to show us they are for real. Well, Lawndale prevailed in a thrilling overtime affair 69-68 to pull even with North and Centennial atop the Pioneer League standings. For that, we give Lawndale their due. What we were not so impressed with, however, was the double digit loss to Torrance two nights later 48-37. (Last week, #9)

Bubble: Narbonne (14-8), Redondo (11-10), Peninsula (12-10), Centennial (11-9)
